Interview with Kimchi Juice

Kimchi Juice for VASA Festival 2018.

I’ve had the pleasure of bringing you a couple of really good interviews the past few Friday’s. These interviews have been around the VA Street Art Festival and this one is the last in the three part series. This week’s it’s the turn of Austrian born US resident Kimchi Juice... enjoy!

Hi Julia how are you? Tell us a little about yourself…

Hi! I’m Kimchi Juice, an 18-year-old artist based in Washington DC, known for painting cute animals flipping the bird.

When did you first start spraying on walls?

A little over a year ago.

What was the original inspiration for grabbing a spray can for the first time?

Necessity. My first wall was for Pow!Wow! DC. When I found out it was going to be 132’ long, I knew I’d have to learn how to spray to make things move faster. Still getting the hang of it!

Do you like to work with a sketch or just freestyle?

I usually work from a small sketch and make changes once I get on the wall.

I gotta know, what was the inspiration for creating these cute lil animals who are casually flipping us the bird?

I think it’s a pretty universal feeling of having to put on a happy face, even though we’re feeling frustrated on the inside.

Is a piece ever finished in your eyes?

I always finish my projects. It’s not in my DNA to leave a public or client project unfinished, but sometimes it’s a mad dash to get things done.

Do you prefer Legal or illegal painting? Or have you not had too much chance to get out and do some cheeky sprays around hidden places?

My grandparents will most likely read this so I definitely only do legal painting!

You painted at the Virginia street art festival last month. How was the experience of being at the festival for you?

It was a lot of fun and it was really nice to have people come out and talk about the impact that street art has had on their community. It was also nice to see kids engage with the art and get excited about the new murals.

What’s the ideal soundtrack to a day’s painting?

I listen to a lot of Muse and Korean rap, but it depends on my mood. I can cycle through classical, 80s pop, and jazz on a given day. When I get tired of music, I switch to podcasts. A few faves are The Dollop, StarTalk, and Last Podcast on the Left.

If you could have one super power for the day what would you choose?!

Definitely would want to be able to manipulate nature. It would be very cool to control and grow plants and communicate with animals.

What’s next for Kimchi Juice?

Painting a wall at an elementary school that I got connected through Awall during Art Basel in Miami. Also doing a quick popup show that week at DIRT Sunset Harbor. Hustling through the holiday season! I’m always open to fun/cool opportunities and collaborations
